Sam Skirrow
Bass Tutor
How long have you been at Nexus?
Since 2005, so this will be my 5th year.
What is your favourite part about working at Nexus?
I get mocked a lot for being short and playing an ‘easy’ instrument, but I know it’s because people secretly admire my height and wished they played the bass... All jokes aside, I’d have to say it’s the relationships formed here both between faculty members and between the staff and students that makes this such an addictive environment to be a part of.
What is the one thing you would like to do before you die?
Where to start – I have a book that lists 101 things to do, however, I love to travel and see amazing things, I’d love to spend time in a place called Svalbard (very high up in the arctic circle) and see the northern lights.
What is your major achievement to date?
On paper it’s probably an A in physics; in terms of physical challenges it’d be spending 3 days in the Atlas Mountains in North Africa; in terms of adventure travel it’s hitchhiking 900miles across Norway; and in terms of fitness it’s about 25 lengths of a swimming pool! But really I honestly think my biggest achievement is having a great job, working with people I love, having the freedom to experience the things I love to do and being happily married to someone far better looking than I am!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie; I love to go bouldering…actually, any outdoor activity. I also enjoy cooking – and then eating what I cook!
What are people surprised to learn about you?
I’m 5’8 – not that short! Really though I’m not sure. I like to surprise people so I might hide in a cupboard for a while- people are often surprised to learn that I’m in a cupboard! I suppose not many people know that I had a scholarship to study astrophysics at Uni though!!
If you could write a book, what would it be about?
I’m not a big reader and so it would have to have a lot of pictures in it – so that narrows down my subject choices quite dramatically. Over the last few years I've been taking pictures of myself doing a headstand in various countries with various backdrops (such as in the alps, or in New York). I reckon when I have enough of them I’ll probably put them in a book – it’s all a bit pointless otherwise…don’t think I’d publish it though.
What is currently on your itunes playlist?
Not sure what a playlist is, but my 5 most recently listened to (from most recent to latest) include Phil Collins, Chris Botti, Justin Timberlake, Jill Scott and Queen.
In two sentences or less, how has your faith changed you?
I used to be someone who put a lot of my trust in my own personality. It was a very unstable thing to trust in but now I have a security in God who is my firm foundation and He validates who I am.
